Fresh ginger, a little sparkle and a refreshing homemade sip!
Homemade Ginger Ale Recipe: Easy Fresh Ginger Syrup and Soda
Ginger ale is a refreshing, fizzy ginger drink with roots in Ireland and Canada, and a long association with the Western soft drink tradition. Its gentle spice and sweetness make it an inviting drink to serve chilled over ice.
I wanted to recreate ginger ale at home using fresh ginger and simple ingredients, with the freedom to adjust the sweetness and strength to my liking.
For this homemade version, I simmered fresh ginger with lemon peel, water and sugar to make a fragrant syrup. Once cooled and chilled, I mixed it with cold club soda and served it over ice. The result was a sparkling, refreshing drink with a lovely ginger kick, easy to prepare and perfect for a warm afternoon!
Ingredients
Servings: Approximately 12
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: Approximately 25–35 minutes
Chilling time: At least 1 hour after cooling
For the Ginger Syrup
- Fresh ginger🫚, peeled and coarsely chopped: 2 cups
- Lemon peel: 3 strips, approximately 4 inches long, yellow part only
- Sugar: 1½ cups
- Water: 4 cups
For Serving
- Chilled club soda🍾: approximately 12 cups, or 2.9 litres
- Ice cubes🧊: as required
- Thin lemon🫒 or lime slices🍋🟩: optional
For each glass🥛: Use ¼ cup ginger syrup and 1 cup club soda, plus ice.
Use a standard measuring cup🫗 of approximately 240 ml.
Method
1. Simmer the Ginger
Place the chopped ginger, lemon peel and water in a large saucepan.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for approximately 10 minutes.
2. Add the Sugar
Add the sugar and stir until completely dissolved.
Continue simmering uncovered for approximately 15 minutes, allowing the liquid to reduce and the ginger flavour to develop. The cooking time will vary depending on your saucepan and heat.
3. Strain the Syrup
Place a fine mesh strainer over a heatproof bowl or measuring jug. Carefully strain the mixture to separate the liquid from the ginger and lemon peel.
Discard the lemon peel. Reserve the cooked ginger for another use, if desired.
Aim for approximately 3 cups of strained syrup. If there is considerably more, return the syrup to the saucepan and simmer a little longer to reduce it. If there is less, add a little boiled water to bring it to 3 cups.
4. Cool and Chill
Allow the syrup to cool, transfer it to a clean glass bottle or jar and refrigerate promptly.
Chill for at least 1 hour, until thoroughly cold.
5. Prepare the Ginger Ale
Pour ¼ cup chilled ginger syrup into a tall glass.
Slowly add 1 cup chilled club soda and stir gently. Add ice cubes and garnish with a thin lemon or lime slice, if desired.
Serve immediately while the bubbles are lively!!!🥂
Health Benefits of Ginger Ale💪🏼
Fresh ginger has traditionally been used for digestive discomfort. Research suggests that ginger may help with certain types of nausea, particularly pregnancy related nausea.
However, most studies have tested ginger supplements rather than ginger ale, so the same benefit cannot be assumed for this drink.
Making ginger ale at home allows you to control the ingredients and the amount of syrup in each serving. This recipe also contains no caffeine or alcohol and requires no fermentation.
⚠️🤚🏼Enjoy it in moderation, as it contains added sugar.
Fizzy drinks can worsen bloating in some people, while ginger can sometimes cause heartburn or stomach discomfort.
Sukanya’s Tips👌
- Choose fresh ginger🫚: Use firm ginger with a fresh aroma.
- Avoid the white pith🍋🟩: Peel only the yellow outer layer of the lemon, as the white pith can make the syrup bitter.
Yellow zest: The thin, fragrant outer skin. Use this in your ginger syrup. 🍋
White pith: The spongy white layer underneath. Leave this on the lemon, as it can make the syrup bitter.
- Adjust the strength: For a lighter drink, begin with 2 tablespoons of syrup per cup of soda and add more to taste.
- Chill both components: Cold syrup and cold soda keep the drink refreshing without needing excessive ice.🧊
- Pour gently: Add the soda🍾slowly and avoid vigorous stirring to preserve the bubbles.
- Balance the sweetness: A small squeeze of fresh lemon🫒 or lime🍋🟩 juice can add a pleasant tang.
- Use the cooked ginger: Finely chop a little and try it over yogurt or vanilla ice cream. Taste first, as it may still be quite pungent.
- Keep the styling simple: A clear glass, a few ice cubes and a slim citrus garnish make an inviting presentation.
Serving Suggestions🍾
Serve homemade ginger ale chilled as an afternoon refreshment, a welcome drink for guests or alongside a meal.
Use clear glasses to show off the ice and delicate bubbles. A thin lemon or lime slice adds a fresh finishing touch.
For gatherings, prepare the syrup ahead and refrigerate it. Add club soda just before serving so that every glass stays fizzy.
There is no particular time at which ginger ale needs to be consumed. Enjoy it as an occasional refreshment.
Storage⚱️
Store the ginger syrup in a clean, tightly covered glass container in the refrigerator and use within one week.
Keep the syrup and club soda separate until serving. The finished ginger ale is best enjoyed freshly mixed, as it loses its fizz over time.
Fresh ginger🫚, a little sparkle✨️ and a refreshing homemade sip!👌🏼
