Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali: 108 Names in Sanskrit, Tamil and English

Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali: A Garland of 108 Names That Reveals the True Meaning of Prosperity

When we hear the name Lakshmi, the first thought that often comes to mind is wealth. Yet the sacred idea of Lakshmi is far wider and deeper than money alone. She is the presence of nourishment, knowledge, compassion, contentment, beauty, fertility, courage, good character, auspiciousness and harmony. Wealth without wisdom may disappear. Success without peace may feel empty. A house filled with possessions but devoid of kindness cannot truly be called prosperous.

The Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali reminds us of this larger meaning of abundance. Through 108 sacred names, Goddess Mahalakshmi is worshipped as Prakriti, the source of creation; Vidya, sacred knowledge; Karuna, compassion; Pushti, nourishment; Tushti, contentment; Lokamatri, the Mother of the world; and Bhuvaneshwari, the sovereign of all worlds.

Each name is a mantra. Together, the names form a beautiful garland of praise offered at the feet of the Divine Mother.

What Does Ashtottara Shatanamavali Mean?

The Sanskrit expression Ashtottara Shatanamavali means a garland or sequence of 108 names.

Ashtottara Shata means one hundred and eight, while Namavali means a garland or series of names. Each name reveals one quality, power, form or divine aspect of the deity.

The number 108 has long held a sacred place in Hindu worship and spiritual practice. A traditional japa mala commonly contains 108 beads, and many deities are worshipped through a set of 108 names. Rather than merely counting, the repetition helps the mind slow down, turn inward and remain steadily focused on the divine.

Lakshmi Is More Than Material Wealth

The Ashtottara teaches us that prosperity has many dimensions.

As Vidya, Lakshmi is knowledge.

As Buddhi, she is intelligence and discernment.

As Karuna, she is compassion.

As Pushti, she is health, nourishment and growth.

As Tushti, she is contentment.

As Dharmanilaya, she is the abode of righteousness.

As Dhanadhanyakari, she blesses the home with wealth and food.

As Lokashokavinashini, she removes the sorrow of the world.

As Shubhaprada, she bestows auspiciousness.

Therefore, invoking Lakshmi is not simply a prayer for money. It is a prayer that abundance should enter our lives in a dharmic form and remain accompanied by wisdom, generosity, gratitude, health and peace.

How Is the Lakshmi Ashtottara Chanted?

The Namavali may be chanted during daily worship or on Fridays, Pournami, Deepavali, Navaratri and Varalakshmi Vratham. The puja space may be cleaned and a lamp lit before a picture, vigraham or kalasam representing Goddess Lakshmi.

Flowers, flower petals, kumkum or akshata may be offered with each name. Every invocation begins with Om and ends with Namah, expressing reverence and surrender. A devotee may also simply sit quietly and chant the names with devotion when elaborate worship is not possible.

There is no need to rush. Clear, sincere chanting is more meaningful than speed. Those following an established family sampradaya should always give precedence to the form taught in their own home or by their guru.

A Note on Pronunciation and Traditional Variations

The English version below is a Roman transliteration to help readers follow the Sanskrit pronunciation. The final word Namah is sometimes spoken as Namaha in everyday chanting.

Small textual variations occur among regional prayer books and family traditions. For example, some versions use Kshamayai in place of Kamakshyai, while a few use Krodhasambhavayai in place of Kshirodasambhavayai. Some also differ slightly in how one or two compound names are divided. Such variations are natural in a living oral tradition. The important practice is to follow one internally consistent version and respect one's family custom.

The version presented here uses Kamakshyai, Kshirodasambhavayai and Anugrahapradayai and contains 108 invocations.

Iti Sri Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali Sampurnam.

A Prayer for Abundance With Awareness

The Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali teaches that true prosperity is not measured only by what we possess. It is also seen in the food that nourishes us, the knowledge that guides us, the compassion that softens us, the courage that sustains us and the contentment that allows us to recognise our blessings.

To chant these 108 names is to invite the many dimensions of Lakshmi into our consciousness. It is a prayer not merely to receive, but also to become worthy custodians of what we receive. When abundance is accompanied by Dharma, gratitude and generosity, it becomes a blessing not only to one home but to the wider world.

"Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah".
