DADI MAA KE NUSKHE / PAATI VAIDYAM (GRANDMOTHER'S HOME REMEDIES) ESPECIALLY FOR OUR BABIES

DADI MAA KE NUSKHE / PAATI VAIDYAM (GRANDMOTHER'S HOME REMEDIES)

Since the time I started this column, many people have been writing to me, they ask me queries on dosages, alternatives etc. etc. I am glad to help as much as possible but I would like to share with my readers that I am not a physician (kindly check the disclaimer below) nor were our grandmother's but they knew how to relieve us with herbs and spices available immediately at home.
Below are some home remedies, which I have heard of, read about and some which are tried and tested and proven to be effective time and again. I owe a lot to my parents who believe strongly in the power of herbs and home remedies. My father has written down many remedies, some of which are shared by me here for the benefit of the people at large. I would love to have contributions from visitors too.

EFFECTIVE HOME REMEDIES FOR BABIES
Babies.......Our precious little ones. We wouldn't want anything to happen to them, but it is well known that the immune systems of babies below the age of one year are immature. Hence, they are very susceptible to falling sick with slight changes in weather, diet, water etc.
Every time I went to the doctor when my baby was sick, he gave me so many packets of medicines, one for cold, one cough, one for allergy, one for fever, one for stomach pain. I felt like I was torturing my baby force feeding her so many different medicines. I'd have to use all my power to subdue her and force feed the medicine. So many times, my baby would reject the medicines by spitting it, vomitting it after crying. After all this I used to wonder if the medicine actually went into her body or not.
I was scared to give her another dose as I was scared that it may become an overdose.
Feeding her the medicines was probably the biggest challenge for me.
The moment husband dear came home the first thing I would hand over to him was the challenge of feeding the Evening dose of the medicines of my baby.
I'm sure many people would agree that feeding a baby so many medicines is a daunting task and after feeding them you are still worried. We are also worried if our baby sleeps too much, has a urinary tract infection or feels constipated because of the medicines given by the doctor as these are the common side effects of consuming the medicines.
So, even after administering the medicines by the doctor. you are worried.......
That's when I realized the value of home remedies.
Indians as a race don’t like to give babies western medicines at the drop of the hat, it is for this reason that most Indian households stock up on medicinal herbs to tackle common situations such as gripes in the middle of the night or a sudden rise in body temperature.
These are also popularly known as Dadi Ma ke nuskhe (Grandmother's prescriptions).

Here is an advertisement that most Indians growing up would remember.....The Woodward's Gripe water Advertisement.

You can see that in the advertisement, a baby cries, the young mother is disturbed, immediately the grandmother of the baby comes and asks what's wrong and suggests her daughter-in-law to administer Woodward's Gripe water, then the great grandmother asks and the great-great grandmother asks. Such is the way, in Indian families, if anything happens, the whole family worries and usually the elderly suggest some home remedies, or herbs from the garden that can be administered to babies. This section is dedicated to preserve our traditional home remedies, which are so simple, easily available and good for the body system and don’t have any side effects. I hope for each and everyone to benefit from these. As we are progressing we are loosing touch of all these home remedies and have started heavily relying on western medicines which have harmful chemicals and side effects too. Simple ailments can be cured with a simple remedy available at home or the backyard garden and need not be treated with expensive visits to the doctor and harmful chemicals ingested into the body.
But not all home remedies may be suitable to every baby's constitution. Be sure to ask your child’s doctor to make sure anything you use is safe.

What to do when an Infant cries abnormally....

What to do when an Infant cries abnormally?
Whenever an infant cries abnormally for a long period of time, the parents need to find out what's wrong with him. Usually infants cry continuously because they are disturbed with something. It could be stomach pain, ear pain or anything that's making them uncomfortable. Since infants cannot talk they express it by crying.

What are the things to do when an infant cries?
1. Make sure that he/she is comfortable. Change his/her clothes and let him wear something loose & comfortable. A fresh pair of clothes could instantly make him /her comfortable. It is advisable to avoid synthetic clothing as this affects the baby's sensitive skin and may cause itching and a rash. Always use soft pre-washed cotton or Malmal (A soft thin plain weave fabric usually made of cotton or silk and dyed in pastel shades). Preferably use whites and non-dyed fabrics on the soft baby skin.

2. Check the baby's crib, blankets etc. Hope the baby is not bit by any insects/bugs. Babies are always an easy target for the creepies' and crawlies.

3. Do not wrap the infant in a cloth, just let him/her loose. Swaddling is confining and may restrict a baby's movement, it will irritate the baby furthermore if he is already irritated.

4. Give the baby some water / breast milk to soothe him/her.

Inspite of all this, if the baby still continues crying,

1. Check all the body parts of the baby for any rashes, insect bites, redness or discoloration. If you don't find any
2. Lightly press the baby's stomach, ears and back. The baby will react immediately if he/she is experiencing pain in any of these areas.

Till you can reach a medical practitioner,  Let the mother carry the baby or keep the baby close to her and keep assuring the baby by gently caressing, singing/ talking to the baby.

Try to soothe the baby by gently massaging the baby and take the baby to a medical practitioner. Let the medical practitioner know your observations.

LACK OF APPETITE IN BABIES. IS MY BABY GETTING ENOUGH BREAST MILK

LACK OF APPETITE IN BABIES. IS MY BABY GETTING ENOUGH BREAST MILK
Most New mother's are super anxious about their newborns. They are worried about whether the baby is getting enough breast milk. Is the supply good enough. Is he/she satisfied. Hope my baby doesn't remain hungry and many mothers also start formula milk as a substitute to breast milk thinking that the baby is not getting enough. This post is for all of them. This post will clear most myths that new mother's have regarding the appetite of the babies and the supply of breast milk.

"NOTHING CAN SUBSTITUTE BREAST MILK / MOTHER'S MILK". EVEN THE FORMULA MILK CONTAINER STATES THAT.....

Breast milk is the best form of nutrition for little infants and I always advocate giving breast milk to babies very strongly. The important thing is how would one know whether the breast milk supply is enough or not....Most new mothers worry that they are not getting enough breast milk but many times the breast milk supply is good enough. So always ensure that you massage the breast well and squeeze out before you latch on the baby to your breast. You can consult your doctor/ a nurse/ midwife on how to do this.

A breast feeding mother should have good nutrition and timely intake of food.
I strongly recommend Shatavari for increase in breast milk.
It's tried and tested. It's available in a Granulated Sugar form which can be added to milk or Himalaya Herbals sell them in Capsule form. I personally prefer the granulated sugar form.

Another problem is, new mothers always latch their babies on to their breasts the moment they cry. Crying could be related to various reasons and not only hunger.

Breastfeeding should be "on demand" (when your baby is hungry), which is generally every 1-3 hours. As newborns get older, they'll need to nurse less frequently — some may feed every hour and a half, whereas others may go 2-3 hours between feedings. Babies who are getting formula will likely take about 2-3 ounces every 2-4 hours. Newborns should not go more than about 4 hours without feeding.

Mothers may want to try nursing 10-15 minutes on each breast, then vary the time as necessary.

Call your baby's doctor if you need to awaken your newborn frequently or continually urge your baby to suck.

Most experts suggest you nurse or feed your baby whenever he or she seems hungry. Signs that babies are hungry include:

·  moving their heads from side to side

·  opening their mouths

·  sticking out their tongues

·  placing their hands and fists to their mouths

·  puckering their lips as if to suck

·  nuzzling again their mothers' breasts

·  showing the rooting reflex (when a baby moves its mouth in the direction of something that's
   stroking or touching its cheek)

A rigid feeding schedule is not necessary; you and your baby will eventually establish your unique feeding pattern. Babies know (and will let their parents know) when they're hungry and when they've had enough. Watch for signs that your baby is full (slow, uninterested sucking; turning away from the breast or bottle) and stop the feeding once these signs appear.

As babies gain weight, they begin to eat more at each feeding and go longer between feedings. There may be other times when your infant seems hungrier than usual. Continue to nurse or feed on demand. Nursing mothers need not worry — Breastfeeding stimulates milk production and your supply of breast milk will automatically adjust to your baby's demand for it.

New mothers, especially breastfeeding moms, are often concerned that their infants may not be getting enough to eat. It's important for breastfed infants to be seen by their pediatrician 48 to 72 hours after a mother and newborn leave the hospital. During this visit, the baby will be weighed and examined, and the mother's breastfeeding technique can be evaluated. It's also an opportunity for nursing mothers to ask questions.

If a breastfed baby is doing well, the doctor will probably schedule another visit for around 2 weeks of age. Formula-fed babies are usually checked between 2 and 4 weeks of age, unless parents have specific concerns.

You can be assured that your baby is getting enough to eat if he or she seems satisfied, produces about six to eight wet diapers a day, has regular bowel movements, sleeps well, is alert when awake, and is gaining weight. A baby who is fussing, crying, seems hungry, and does not appear satisfied after feeding may not be getting enough to eat. If you're concerned that your baby isn't getting enough to eat, call your doctor.

Many infants "spit up" a small amount after eating or during burping, but a baby should not vomit after feeding. This can be due to overfeeding, but vomiting after every feeding may be a sign of an allergy, digestive problem, or other problem that needs medical attention. If you have concerns that your baby is spitting up too much, call your doctor.

Although your baby will probably start on some solid foods between 4 and 6 months, breast milk or formula will remain the most important source of nutrition through the first year of life.

Commercially prepared infant formula is a nutritious alternative to breast milk. Bottle feeding can offer more freedom and flexibility for the mother, and it makes it easier to know how much the baby is getting.

Because babies digest formula more slowly than breast milk, a baby who is getting formula may need fewer feedings than one who breastfeeds.

If you feel your baby's appetite is not good, monitor his weight, if he is gradually putting on weight do not worry. Also monitor his activities, as long as he is achieving the milestones matching to his age, you do not need to worry.

After the 4th month, you can introduce your baby slowly to solid foods. monitoring whether he is able to digest the same.

Introduce one food at a time, if he/she is able to take it then continue for a week, then the following week introduce him to the next thing.

****A baby's tummy is the size of his fist - remember this as you are feeding him; it doesn't take much food to make a "meal"!****

HOME REMEDIES FOR SUNSTROKE

HOME REMEDIES FOR SUNSTROKE
Surya Santap (heat exhaustion) leads to trishna (excessive thirst).
Pitta dosha is primarily involved in trishna of surya santap and is characterized by a bitter taste in the mouth, a burning sensation in the head, a yellowish tinge in the eyes, faecal matter and urine besides unconsciousness.
Persons afflicted with trishna like to have cold drinks.

Heat exhaustion is endemic to hot climates like India (long and severe summers). The person suffers from high fever, thirst, rapid pulse beats, absence of sweating and confusion. A more severely affected person may lose consciousness altogether.

When your dear one has a sunstroke, do the following thing :-

  • Cold sponging all over the body is the simplest measure. For better results, add a teaspoonful of rose water to the cold water before sponging.
  • The person should be given adequate liquids if the situation permits.
  • If raw mangoes are available, boil two mangoes in two glasses of water for 15-20 minutes. Strain the boiled contents and give it to the affected person. Use half a cup or so at a time. You may add salt or sugar to it.
